How did toilet paper originate?
The fact that there is a lot of expertise about toilet paper in China is actually very logical when you consider that the first toilet paper originated there. Paper-making itself might even have been a reason for the golden age in China (618-907). In the 6th century, the first description of toilet paper was found in a text in China. However, it wasn't until 1391 that paper was used and made specifically for this purpose.
It was Ts'ai Lun who mixed bark, hemp, and rags (old clothes) with water and thus discovered the pulp process. This mixture was then pounded into pulp. Who is the inventor of toilet paper?
The real inventor of toilet paper was therefore a person in China. Here, the first toilet paper was used long before the commercialization of toilet rolls. It wasn't until 1857 that a man named Joseph Gayetty packaged and sold his flat-folded paper sheets as the first toilet paper, thus becoming the inventor of toilet paper. Why is toilet paper white?
Toilet paper is white because it is bleached. Without bleach, toilet paper would have a brownish color. Under the theme of "too much information", white paper is better in the sense that people can more clearly check their toilet visit. Colored toilet paper or even brown toilet paper is less suitable for this purpose.
But besides the hygienic preference for color, there is another "better" reason why paper is bleached. To explain this, a small insight into the production of toilet paper is needed.
Toilet paper is made from cellulose fibers that come from, for example, trees, bamboo and recycled paper or cardboard. The fibers can be short or long, which differs per origin of the fiber. The fibers are mixed with water to form pulp, and this pulp is then bleached with hydrogen peroxide or chlorine. This process is also responsible for making the paper soft because the chemicals remove lignin from the paper. However, there is still a debate about this because bleaching virgin wood pulp makes the softest material, but it's not at all necessary. Cellulose fibers are already white, and perfectly soft toilet paper can be made from unbleached fibers. Bleached toilet paper is thus more of a norm than it really has a function.
