Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that, due to their water-, oil-, and dirt-repellent properties, are used in countless products, including packaging materials and textiles. Their persistence in the environment and potential harmful effects on health have raised concerns about their use.
Recent research has shown that PFAS can also be found in toilet paper, contributing to their spread in the environment. Source: Deingenieur.nl

What are PFAS?
PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been used since the 1940s in various industrial and consumer products due to their unique properties, such as water-, oil-, and dirt-repellency. These substances hardly break down in the environment, which is why they have earned the nickname "forever chemicals". They are present in low concentrations in clothing, furniture, packaging, cosmetics, and even in food and water.
PFAS in toilet paper
Although toilet paper is mostly associated with hygiene and comfort, some types can contribute to PFAS pollution. This is concerning since toilet paper is an everyday product. When toilet paper containing PFAS is flushed, these chemicals can enter the wastewater and eventually pollute the environment.
Health and Environmental Risks
Exposure to certain PFAS compounds has been linked to health problems such as immune system disruption, liver damage, and an increased risk of certain cancers. In the environment, PFAS can accumulate in food chains, which is harmful to both animals and humans.
Bamboi's commitment to PFAS-free products
At Bamboi® we do not add any fluorine compounds to our bamboo toilet paper and conduct rigorous tests to detect the presence of PFAS. Although minimal traces of PFAS may be found as a result of environmental contamination, these remain within legal limits and we strive to eliminate them entirely.
Our commitment includes thorough research of our supply chain, regular testing of raw materials and packaging, and revising our production processes to identify and eliminate potential sources of PFAS.
Protect Your Health and the Environment with PFAS-Free Toilet Paper
PFAS are all around us and pose potential risks to both our health and the environment. Many everyday products, including toilet paper, may contain these harmful chemicals without us even realizing it.
At Bamboi® we take this seriously and produce safe, sustainable, and PFAS-free bamboo toilet paper. In this article you can read more about the sustainable production process of Bamboi® toilet paper.
