Hanging toilet paper: are you doing it right or wrong?
How do you hang toilet paper, over the edge or under it? It sounds like a question with an obvious answer, but few bathroom matters cause so much debate. From kitchen table squabbles to full-blown online arguments: the way you hang a toilet roll apparently says more than you think.
Fortunately, there is an answer. In fact, there are several answers, depending on height, position, and even personality. This guide lays it all out.
Over the edge or under the edge?

This is the eternal debate in bathroom circles, but the outcome has actually been settled since 1891. That year, Seth Wheeler, the inventor of modern roll toilet paper, patented his design. The drawing in the patent clearly shows: the roll hangs over the edge, facing forward.
That is not only historically correct, it is also more practical. When the paper hangs over the edge, you are less likely to touch the wall or holder while tearing it off. That is more hygienic. The edge is also easier to grab, especially when you are in a hurry.
At what height do you hang a toilet roll holder?

The standard guideline for the height of a toilet roll holder is 60 to 70 centimetres from the floor. That is roughly at elbow height when you are sitting on the toilet.
Positioned too high or too low means unnecessary reaching or bending. That may sound like a small thing, but notice it the next time you are at someone else's home. A poorly placed holder stands out immediately.
As for the distance from the toilet: 15 to 20 centimetres to the side is the common standard. Closer is convenient, but make sure you can reach it comfortably without twisting.
Left or right of the toilet?
There is no universally correct answer to the question of which side you hang the toilet roll holder — it depends on the space and the user. As a rule of thumb: right-handed people hang the holder on the right, left-handed people on the left. That way you do not have to reach across your body.
In small bathrooms, the space has the final say. Is there a wall on one side that leaves hardly any room? Then the layout determines the choice. Always hang the holder on the side you can reach most comfortably.
For households with multiple users: choose the side that works best for the majority, and let the rest adjust.
What does it say about your personality?
Now that the serious work is done, something a little lighter. American relationship therapist Dr. Gilda Carle conducted research among 2,000 people into the relationship between toilet paper hanging and personality.
Her conclusion: people who hang the paper over the edge are, on average, more dominant and assertive. People who hang it under are more accommodating and easygoing. Over the edge? Type A. Under the edge? Type B.
Whether you take this seriously is, of course, up to you. But it might explain why the topic stirs up so much debate. It is never really about the paper.
Why bamboo toilet paper hangs differently
Most rolls of bamboo toilet paper dutifully disappear into a holder, wrapped in unremarkable white or grey plastic. Bamboi® does things differently.
Every Bamboi® roll is individually wrapped in a colourful, plastic-free paper wrapper. That turns the holder into a small decorative accent in the bathroom — a detail that stands out and that you consciously choose. Not a plastic wrapper you hastily throw away, but a roll that is worth seeing on display.
Bamboi® is 3-ply, super soft, and unbleached. Free from fragrances and chemicals, 100% bamboo and FSC-certified. The rolls contain Bamboo Kun, a natural antibacterial substance found naturally in bamboo. And delivery? Carbon neutral.
Hanging a roll that simply looks beautiful and is good for the planet — that is the choice Bamboi® gives you.
